ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

- University of Saskatchewan uses recent credits to calculate University Academic Average (UAA). Credits amount used is dependent on applicants’ academic level. Please see below:
- If you are in the final year: UAA will be calculated using a minimum of 90 credits up to maximum of 120 credits.
- If you have already graduated: UAA will be calculated using the most recent 120 credits.
- University of Saskatchewan uses recent credits to calculate University Academic Average (UAA). Credits amount used is dependent on applicants’ academic level. Please see below:
- Minimum GPA:
- Minimum GPA required to apply is 80% for all applicants. However, the median GPA of the accepted students was 90% in 2023-2024 cycle.
- Required Course Load:
- University of Saskatchewan strongly encourages students to have at least one full course-load year within the last 3 years of studies. Full course-load is considered to be 30 credits (3 credits = 1 semester course).
- Minimum Credits Required:
- Applicants must have completed at least 90 credits by the application deadline to be eligible. This is equivalent to around 30 semester courses or 3 years of full course-load undergraduate years.
- Pre-requisite Courses
- University of Saskatchewan has a mandatory 3 credits (1 semester) of Indigenous course to be taken. Approved list of Indigenous course per university are found in this chart. Applicants must have completed the course prior to matriculation by the specified deadline. In 2025 cycle, April 30 was the deadline.
- If applicants are not in school, they can complete the certificate from the Indigenous Canada course offered by the University of Alberta or Building an Awareness of Cultural Humility course by University of Saskatchewan.
ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENTS
- MCAT
- All applicants must have a minimum total MCAT score of 492, with a minimum score for each section being 123. However, one section may be 122 as long as the total score is at least 492. However, the median MCAT score of accepted students was 507 in 2024-2025 cycle.
- CASPer
- University of Saskatchewan uses CASPer is used as one of the criteria to determine interview invites. Although it is not listed on their website whether it is used competitively or not, it is speculated that the CASPer is used as a cut-off.
- According to their admissions presentation of 2024, MCAT and Academic Average along with Saskatchewan connectedness and DSAAP index were used to determine interview invites. In final admissions ranking, CASPer was not mentioned as part of the calculation.
RESIDENCE
- University of Saskatchewan does not have a specific provincial residency requirements. However, Saskatchewan connectedness and rural index are used in evaluation applicants. Applicants from Yukon, Nunavut, and Northwest Territories will also be given the same connectedness weight.
- As a result, the majority of the seats will be given to those with connection to Saskatchewan or Yukon, Nunavut, and Northwest territories and those with connection to rural areas regardless of which province they reside in.
EXTRACURRICULARS
- All applicants are required to submit written personal statements. The instructions and questions will be available only after applicants have submitted their application. Applicants will only be allowed 750 words per questions asked.
- University of Saskatchewan uses selection formulas for candidates.
- For interview invites (MMI): 50% UAA + 50% MCAT
- For Panel/Conversation circle: 50% UAA + 50% MMI
- For Final Admissions: 30% UAA + 35% MMI + 35% Panel interview
- For Indigenous applicants, this will be determined through a holistic review of academic performance, personal attributes and recommendation from the committees after conversation circle
- At each stage of the application, Saskatchewan/Rural connectedness index and DSAAP index will be applied.
INTERVIEW
- University of Saskatchewan has two phases of interview: MMI & Panel/Conversation circle
- In University of Saskatchewan’s MMI, there are 6 stations. Each station is 10 minutes long, with 2 minutes reading time and 8 minutes of response time. One assessor will be present per station.
- Only the selected candidates will progress to panel interview/conversation circle. In panel interview, it will be around 45 minutes long with at least 2 interviewers. One interviewer will be a faculty member, while the other interviewer will be a medical learner. University of Saskatchewan aims to learn about applicants’ background, experiences, goals and motivations for entering medical school through this process.
REFERENCES
- Applicants selected for interview are required to submit 3 references who knows applicants at a supervisory capacity within the last four years. This may include research supervisor, employment/volunteer/leadership supervisor. The request for references will be sent to the applicant at the time of MMI offers. References will be contacted for a 10-15 minutes phone call, which will be scheduled via email.
PATHWAYS/SPECIAL STREAMS
- Indigenous Admissions Pathway (IAP): University of Saskatchewan reserves up to 20 seats each year for Indigenous applicants. Applicants must provide proof of Indigenous membership/citizenship to be eligible.
- Indigenous applicants are first assessed to see if they would be successful in the general applicant pool. If not, applicants will be considered within the Indigenous Admissions Program pool.
- As part of the admissions process, applicants will be participating in Indigenous Admissions circle, which is a conversation circle with Indigenous physicians and medical learners. Only the applicants selected from the MMI will proceed to Conversation Circles.
- Diversity and Social Accountability Admissions Program (DSAAP): This program considers socioeconomic and other systemic barriers applicants may have faced. All applicants will be given the opportunity to answer voluntary questionnaires. University of Saskatchewan reserves up to 7 seats for DSAAP applicants.
- Black Student Admissions Pathway (BSAP): This is a new pathway introduced in the 2025 application cycle (for 2026 admissions). More information will become available for the coming cycle.
- MD/MBA: Around two applicants are accepted each year. Applicants must be accepted to both MD and MBA program.
- Graduate students: Although this is not an official/recognized pathway, applicants with graduate degree will receive a percentage grade augmentation. Applicants with multiple graduate degree will receive one highest percentage rate augmentation.
- If applicants are currently enrolled in a graduate program with a minimum of 6 credits completed: 2% augmentation
- If applicants have completed Master’s program: 3% augmentation
- If applicants have completed PhD program: 4% augmentation
