ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

  • GPA: University of Toronto (U of T) uses 4.0 scale. To convert your grades, use the OMSAS GPA conversion chart here. For detailed how-to for calculating your GPA, please see this post.
    • U of T calculates cumulative GPA (cGPA) using all courses from the full-time undergraduate years. U of T defines full-time to be 3 FCEs (6 semester courses) or more during the fall/winter term and 1.5 FCEs (3 semester courses) or more during the summer terms.
    • Please note that any part-time courses are not counted towards GPA calculation, although they will be used to meet the pre-requisite and degree requirements.
  • Minimum GPA:
    • Minimum GPA required to apply is 3.6/4.0 for all applicants. However, the average GPA of admitted students for 2023-2024 cycle was 3.95/4.0.
  • Required Course Load:
    • Although there is no strict requirement for course load, U of T’s GPA calculation only includes the courses taken on a full-time basis. As a result, applicants must have taken at least 3 years of full-time undergraduate years to be eligible for GPA calculation, resulting in indirect full-time course load requirement.
      • U of T’s full-time course definition is written above.
  • Minimum Credits Required:
    • U of T requires applicants to have completed a minimum of 15 FCEs by the end of April in the year of entry to medical school. This roughly translates to around 3 undergraduate years.
  • Pre-requisite Courses:
    • There are several mandatory pre-requisite courses outlined by. University of Toronto. Please see below:
      • 2 FCEs (4 semester courses) in life sciences
      • 1 FCE (2 semester courses) in social science, humanities or language

ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENTS

  • MCAT
    • MCAT is required to apply to U of T, and is used as a cut-off/threshold. The minimum threshold is 125 per section, with allowance of 124 in one section.
  • CASPer
    • CASPer is not required to apply to U of T.

RESIDENCE

  • Please note that there are changes to IP status following the Ontario government’s announcement on legislation changes. This legislation proposes that 95% of the Ontario’s medical school seats be allocated for Ontario residents. However, it is still unclear how this will impact U of T’s medical school seat allocation.
  • Ontario’s IP criteria that comes into effect starting this cycle is as follows:
    • Applicant or their spouse has, at any time after their 14th birthday, resided in Ontario for at least 12 consecutive months and has either:
      • received an Ontario Secondary School Diploma; or
      • not resided in another province or territory for 12 or more consecutive months since completing the most recent 12 month residency period in Ontario
    • To determine that the applicant or spouse has met the criteria, the full-time studies at a post-secondary institution will not be included unless:
      • Applicant or spouse was in a full-time, in-person degree in Ontario; and
      • The program attended is one that is ordinarily completed in four or more academic years

EXTRACURRICULARS

  • All applicants will be asked to fill out Autobiographical Sketch (ABS) on their OMSAS portal. These are classified as: Employment, Volunteer activities, Extracurricular activities, Awards and Accomplishments, Research, and Other. You can enter up to 32 entries on the portal.
  • Applicants are also required to submit two personal essays in 250 words or less. The two questions asked for 2024-2025 cycle were:
    • 1. In what way(s) are you a product of the world around you? How was it, or how will it, impact your journey in medicine?
    • 2. Investor and philanthropist Charlie Munger is known for saying: “We all are learning, modifying, or destroying ideas all the time. Rapid destruction of your ideas when the time is right is one of the most valuable qualities you can acquire. You must force yourself to consider arguments on the other side.” Explore how this may affect a career in medicine.

INTERVIEW

  • U of T has their own interview style, called virtual Modified Personal Interview (vMPI). It is similar to MMI, in that it consists of 4 independent interviewers assessing one applicant. In 2024-2025 cycle, each interview was around 5 minutes long, with 2 minutes to review and prepare your responses. It is typically conducted asynchronously.
