ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

  • GPA: University of Manitoba uses 4.5 scale. To convert your grades, use this chart. You must meet the minimum required GPA for your application to be considered. For detailed how-to for calculating your GPA, please see this post or use this tool.
    • Adjusted GPA are calculated with the lowest marks dropped from the calculation. This applies to applicants with 90+ credits (3 credits = 1 semester course). The amount of credits dropped will vary depending on the credit hours completed. Please see below:
      • If 90-95 credits are completed, 15 credits will be dropped
      • If 96-101 credits are completed, 18 credits will be dropped
      • If 102-107 credits are completed. 21 credits will be dropped
      • If 108-113 credits are completed, 24 credits will be dropped
      • If 114-119 credits are completed, 27 credits will be dropped
      • If 120+ credits are completed, 30 credits will be dropped
    • Applicants with five-year gap between the last registration of the first program and the first registration of the second program may also request to eliminate the first program from the GPA calculation.
    • All courses, including summer and part-time courses, are included in the calculation.
  • Minimum GPA:
    • Minimum GPA required to be eligible is 3.3/4.5 for both IP and OOP applicants. However, the median GPA of interviewed candidates for 2024-2025 cycle were 4.22 for IP applicants and 4.5 for OOP applicants.
  • Required Course Load:
    • Although applicants are not required to take full-course load in general, eligibility for IP status require Manitoban students to have taken a minimum of 2 full-time studies in their undergraduate years in Manitoba.
  • Minimum Credits Required:
    • Applicants must have completed Bachelor’s degree by the year of the admissions. There is otherwise no listed minimum credits required on their website.
  • Pre-requisite Courses
    • University of Manitoba requires all applicants to have taken 3 credits of Indigenous course, with a minimum of ‘C’ grade. This must be completed prior to application. You can find the approved Indigenous course list here.
    • University of Manitoba also recommends applicants to consider taking courses in the following disciplines: biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, psychology, sociology, biochemistry, microbiology, and research methods as per AAMC recommendations.

ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENTS

  • MCAT
    • University of Manitoba does not explicitly list a minimum required MCAT. However, the median MCAT score of Interviewed candidates in 2024-2025 cycle was 511 for IP applicants and 522 for OOP applicants. The composite score, rather than individual section, is used.
  • CASPer
    • University of Manitoba uses CASPer competitively in their assessments. All applicants must achieve a threshold score greater than 1.5 standard deviations below the mean for their applicant pool to be eligible. In other words, all applicants must score above a minimum cutoff, which is set at 1.5 standard deviations below the average score of other applicants in their group.
    • Please note that CASPer is not used to assess Indigenous applicants. However, Indigenous applicants may be considered as part of the general pool, which requires CASPer.

RESIDENCE

  • University of Manitoba gives preferences for Manitoban residents. Only up to 5% of the seats are allocated to OOP applicants. To be considered a Manitoban resident, applicant must:
    • Have graduated from Manitoba high school or hold university degree from Manitoba
    • Have completed a minimum of two consecutive years of full-time studies in university of Manitoba while residing in Manitoba by the time of application
    • Have been a resident in Manitoba for a minimum of two years following high school graduation
  • Applicants who are residents of one of the three territories will also be considered IP. Additionally, applicants who have served in the Canadian Forces for at least two full-time years will be considered IP as well.

EXTRACURRICULARS

  • Applicants will be asked to fill out an autobiographical form if applicable. These forms are related to attributes, used as part of the calculations in scoring the applicants. There are three attributes mentioned on their admissions handbook:
    • 1. Socioeconomic and Cultural Diversity – The admissions committee evaluates this attribute based on the following domains:
      • Family history
      • Economic information
      • Other socio-cultural determinants
    • 2. Rural Attributes – For IP applicants, University of Manitoba has already identified rural criteria in their online application form. For OOP applicants, any area with population less than 40,000 is considered to be rural. The following domains will be considered in evaluating this attribute:
      • Rural “roots”
      • Rural work experience
      • Rural volunteer or leadership experience
    • 3. Advanced Academic Attributes – This attribute is assessed based on the following domain:
      • PhD – It must be completed at the time of application
      • Peer-reviewed publications – A minimum of 5 peer reviewed publications as a 1st or 2nd author is required at the time of application
      • Academic appointments in a research or professorial stream
  • University of Manitoba calculates the composite score for all applicants based on this formula for interview invites: (20% AGPA + 50% MCAT + 30% CASPer) x (Rural coefficient if > 0) x (Academic coefficient if > 0) x (Socioeconomic and cultural diversity coefficient if > 0)
  • All eligible applicants applying through Canadian Indigenous pool will be offered an interview.

INTERVIEW

  • University of Manitoba conducts MMI-style interview virtually. There is no official information regarding interview format posted on their website.
    • However, based on the forums like ‘premedcanada’, University of Manitoba’s MMI has 6 stations. Each station will consist of 3 shorter questions. Applicants will have 2 minutes to read and prepare for each question with 2 minutes to answer the first question and 3 minutes each to answer the remaining questions.
    • There was also a mention of the interview being asynchronous, although this is also not confirmed by the official sources.
  • For Canadian Indigenous Applicant pool, they will also be invited to participate in an Indigenous panel interview in addition to MMI. The panel interview follows the Indigenous methodologies for interviewing. The applicants will be considered for both the Indigenous pool as well as either IP or OOP general applicant pool.

REFERENCES

  • For applicants selected for interview, they are required to submit three references. The referees chosen must be able to discuss applicants’ academic performance, work experience, and community involvement. University of Manitoba emphasizes that the referees must know the applicants well, including their strengths and weaknesses, and have known the applicant for at least two years.
    • The references are not used as part of the applicant scoring calculations, but rather to verify the suitability of the applicant.
  • However, the letters of reference for the Canadian Indigenous Applicant pool will contribute to the composite score

PATHWAYS/SPECIAL STREAMS
