ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
- GPA: Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) uses 4.0 scale. To convert your grades, use the OMSAS GPA conversion chart here. For detailed how-to for calculating your GPA, please see this post.
- TMU uses cumulative GPA (cGPA) in their assessment.
- All grades including supplementary, spring, summer, part-time and distance education courses will be used to calculate the overall GPA.
- Minimum GPA:
- Minimum GPA required to apply is 3.5/4.0 for all applicants. However, the average GPA of admitted students for 2024-2025 cycle was 3.8/4.0 with minimum GPA of 3.3/4.0 required.
- Required Course Load:
- There is no required course load for applicants to have taken to be eligible as long as applicants obtain 4-year equivalent baccalaureate degree prior to the first day of class.
- Minimum Credits Required:
- TMU requires applicants to obtain 4-year baccalaureate degree prior to the first day of class.
- Pre-requisite Courses:
- There is no mandatory pre-requisite courses needed to be eligible for TMU.

RESIDENCE
- TMU does not differentiate between IP and OOP applicants, but rather has a strong commitment towards equity, diversity and inclusion. There are several admissions streams available for applicants to apply through. TMU also assesses applicants’ connection to Brampton/Peel region.
- Please note that there may be changes to IP status following the Ontario government’s announcement on legislation changes. This legislation proposes that 95% of the Ontario’s medical school seats be allocated for Ontario residents. However, it is still unclear how this will impact TMU’s medical school seat allocation.

- Ontario’s IP criteria that comes into effect starting this cycle is as follows:
- Applicant or their spouse has, at any time after their 14th birthday, resided in Ontario for at least 12 consecutive months and has either:
- received an Ontario Secondary School Diploma; or
- not resided in another province or territory for 12 or more consecutive months since completing the most recent 12 month residency period in Ontario
- To determine that the applicant or spouse has met the criteria, the full-time studies at a post-secondary institution will not be included unless:
- Applicant or spouse was in a full-time, in-person degree in Ontario; and
- The program attended is one that is ordinarily completed in four or more academic years
- Applicant or their spouse has, at any time after their 14th birthday, resided in Ontario for at least 12 consecutive months and has either:
EXTRACURRICULARS
- All applicants will be asked to fill out Autobiographical Sketch (ABS) on their OMSAS portal. These are classified as: Employment, Volunteer activities, Extracurricular activities, Awards and Accomplishments, Research, and Other. You can enter up to 32 entries on the portal.
- Applicants are also required to submit their responses to 3 supplementary questions. Supplementary questions for the 2026 cycle are:
- 1. How have your lived experiences and/or identity contributed to your personal growth, educational path, and desire to pursue a career in medicine? (250 words maximum)
- 2. What leadership roles and/or community engagement experiences have you undertaken within your community, particularly in efforts aimed at supporting and advocating for marginalized groups? (250 words maximum)
- 3. Please describe how you would contribute to engaging and uplifting underserved communities as a future physician, drawing upon your experiences outlined above. (250 words maximum)
- TMU considers regional connection to the following areas:
- a. Peel: Brampton, Mississauga, Caledon
- b. Bolton
- c. Dufferin
- d. Halton: Milton, Burlington, Oakville, Halton Hills
- e. North Etobicoke
- f. West Woodbridge
- Applicants with a connection to the Brampton/Peel region and surrounding communities will also be required to submit supporting documentations.
INTERVIEW
- TMU conducts virtual MMI style interview for selected applicants. TMU’s MMI consists of 8 stations. Although there is no official information on the details of MMI stations, comments on forums indicated that each MMI station involve 2 minutes of reading/prepping and 6 minutes of response time.
- Prior to MMI invites, TMU also conducts online assessment of candidates through Kira Talent platform.
REFERENCES
- All applicants are required to submit three referees through OMSAS application portal. In choosing three referees, these are the following recommended criteria:
- One academic or employment related
- One non-academic / character referee
- One referee of your choosing
- References completing the Confidential Assessment Forms (CAF) will be asked the following questions:
- 1. Would this applicant make a good physician?
- 2. Rate the applicant on each of the following attributes: Communication skills, Problem-solving skills, Professionalism, Empathy
- 3. Identify and comment on 1 area of improvement for the applicant
- 4. Share any other information you feel may be relevant to a medical school’s admission committee
PATHWAYS/SPECIAL STREAMS
- Indigenous Admissions Pathway: Indigenous applicants must meet the same minimum eligibility criteria as the general stream applicants.
- To be eligible, applicants must submit the answers to the following supplementary questions:
- 1. Please provide a short statement reflecting on your identity as an Indigenous person. This should include your ancestral community. (200 words maximum)
- 2. Please reflect on your connection and contributions to your Indigenous community, with examples wherever possible. How have these experiences shaped your identity and goals? (500 words maximum)
- 3. Please share with us examples of experiences that demonstrate suitability for a career in medicine, and how you envision contributing as a future leader in Indigenous health and wellness throughout Canada. (500 words maximum)
- Applicants must also provide a proof of Indigenous ancestry either through a verifier from the Indigenous community or a formal documentation.
- Indigenous applicants will also participate in alternate interview format than MMI, such as talking-circle.
- To be eligible, applicants must submit the answers to the following supplementary questions:
- Black Admissions Pathway: Black applicants must meet the same minimum eligibility criteria as the general stream applicants.
