ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

  • GPA: Western university calculates 2 best full-time year’s GPA in their assessment.
    • In a full-time year, there must be at least 5 full or equivalent courses (30 credit hours) during Fall/Winter term. Western does not consider part-time or summer term courses for GPA calculation. One semester course is equivalent to 3 credit hours.
    • Please note that at least 18 credit hours (6 semester courses) must be at or above academic year of applicant’s study.
  • Minimum GPA:
    • Minimum GPA required to apply is 3.7/4.0 for each best full-time year. However, the average GPA of admitted applicants for 2023-2024 cycle was 3.95/4.0 for the first best year and 3.9/4.0 for the second best year. GPA is used as a cut-off for interview invites, but it is unclear how GPA is used post-interview.
    • Please note that minimum GPA varies each year based on the competitiveness of the applicant pool.
  • Required Course Load:
    • Western university requires applicants to have taken a minimum of 2 full-time years of course load between September to April. Full-time course load is defined as minimum 30 credit hours, which is approximately 10 semester courses.

ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENTS

  • MCAT
    • MCAT is required for admissions to Western university. The minimum MCAT required varies each year based on the competitiveness of the applicant pool.
    • The minimum required MCAT differs based on general or pathway stream. In 2024-2025 cycle, the minimum required MCAT for general stream applicants were 127 C/P, 127 CARS, 127 B/B, 126 P/S. For pathway stream applicants, minimum required MCAT is 125 per section.
    • The average MCAT for admitted applicants in 2023-2024 cycle was 128 C/P, 127 CARS, 129 B/B, 129 P/S. MCAT is used as a cut-off for interview invites, but it is unclear how MCAT is used post-interview.
  • CASPer
    • CASPer is not required to apply to Western university.

RESIDENCE

  • There is a Southwestern Ontario admissions pathway for applicants who graduated high school in Southwestern Ontario region.
    • There is no specific quota for Southwestern Ontario admissions pathway and there is no guarantee of admission if you qualify for this stream.
  • Please note that there are changes to IP status following the Ontario government’s announcement on legislation changes. This legislation proposes that 95% of the Ontario’s medical school seats be allocated for Ontario residents. However, it is still unclear how this will impact Western’s medical school seat allocation.

  • Ontario’s IP criteria that comes into effect starting this cycle is as follows:
    • Applicant or their spouse has, at any time after their 14th birthday, resided in Ontario for at least 12 consecutive months and has either:
      • received an Ontario Secondary School Diploma; or
      • not resided in another province or territory for 12 or more consecutive months since completing the most recent 12 month residency period in Ontario
    • To determine that the applicant or spouse has met the criteria, the full-time studies at a post-secondary institution will not be included unless:
      • Applicant or spouse was in a full-time, in-person degree in Ontario; and
      • The program attended is one that is ordinarily completed in four or more academic years

EXTRACURRICULARS

  • All applicants will be asked to fill out Autobiographical Sketch (ABS) on their OMSAS portal. These are classified as: Employment, Volunteer activities, Extracurricular activities, Awards and Accomplishments, Research, and Other. You can enter up to 32 entries on the portal.
  • In addition to OMSAS, Western university also requires Western Autobiographical Sketch (Western ABS). The instruction to complete this portion will be sent after the application through OMSAS. Western ABS is conducted on Kira Talent, and will comprise of both the video and written component.
    • This component focuses on applicants’ non-academic strengths, impactful or transformative life experiences, and personal values.

INTERVIEW

  • Western university conducts a virtual panel-style interview. Western university’s official website states that the interview is around 30-45 minutes long, and involves 3 panel interviewers. The panel consists of a physician, a community member, and a current medical student.
  • Based on forum comments and posts, interview is thought to be closed file and the questions can consist of personal, situational, ethical, or opinion-based.

REFERENCES

  • All applicants are required to submit three referees through OMSAS application portal. In choosing three referees, these are the following recommended criteria:
    • One academic or employment related
    • One non-academic / character referee
    • One referee of your choosing
  • References completing the Confidential Assessment Forms (CAF) will be asked the following questions:
    • 1. Would this applicant make a good physician?
    • 2. Rate the applicant on each of the following attributes: Communication skills, Problem-solving skills, Professionalism, Empathy
    • 3. Identify and comment on 1 area of improvement for the applicant
    • 4. Share any other information you feel may be relevant to a medical school’s admission committee

PATHWAYS/SPECIAL STREAMS

  • Access Pathway: This pathway is intended for applicants who are under-represented within medicine. It may include those with financial and/or medical challenges, under-representation in medicine (like Latin Americans or Filipino), low socioeconomic status, or socio-cultural barriers.
    • Applicants must submit a personal statement to describe how you adapted to or overcame your challenges, your experiences, future goals, and how your lived experiences will shape you in being a future healthcare provider. Additionally, you must provide supporting documents as a proof.
    • Although not guaranteed, there may be a flexibility for minimum MCAT requirement (i.e. 125 per section). However, applicants must still meet the other minimum eligibility criteria as the general stream.
  • Black Applicant Pathway (BAP): Black applicants must self-identify on OMSAS and submit a 500-words personal statement.
    • Although not guaranteed, there may be a flexibility for minimum MCAT requirement (i.e. 125 per section). However, applicants must still meet the other minimum eligibility criteria as the general stream.
    • If applicants qualify under this stream, their applications and interviews are assessed by diversity and equity panel that involves members who self-identify as black.
  • Indigenous Applicant Pathway: Indigenous applicants must submit a proof of ancestry, personal statement to describe their experiences and future goals, and letters of support from Indigenous communities or organizations.
    • Although not guaranteed, there may be a flexibility for minimum MCAT requirement (i.e. 125 per section). However, applicants must still meet the other minimum eligibility criteria as the general stream.
    • For Indigenous applicants selected for interview, they will be welcomed by traditional Elders and receive support from Indigenous medical student throughout the interview day. Interviews are typically 45 minutes long, and will consist of Indigenous physician, an Indigenous community member, and a current medical student.
  • Military Medical Training Program (MMTP): Applicants must have been an active member of Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) for a minimum of 12 consecutive months prior to application deadline to be eligible. Applicants must also be eligible and approved to receive funding of medical school tuition by CAF.
    • Although not guaranteed, there may be a flexibility for minimum MCAT requirement (i.e. 125 per section). However, applicants must still meet the other minimum eligibility criteria as the general stream.
    • For MMTP applicants, Western university will aim to have an interview panel comprised of individuals with CAF affiliation.
  • Southwestern Ontario Pathway: Applicants who completed 4 years of high school within the designated counties are eligible to apply through this stream. The listed counties include: Grey, Bruce, Huron, Perth, Oxford, Elgin, Middlesex, Lambton, Chatham-Kent, and Essex.
    • There is a flexibility for minimum MCAT requirement (i.e. 125 per section). However, applicants must still meet the other minimum eligibility criteria as the general stream.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

  • GPA: University of Toronto (U of T) uses 4.0 scale. To convert your grades, use the OMSAS GPA conversion chart here. For detailed how-to for calculating your GPA, please see this post.
    • U of T calculates cumulative GPA (cGPA) using all courses from the full-time undergraduate years. U of T defines full-time to be 3 FCEs (6 semester courses) or more during the fall/winter term and 1.5 FCEs (3 semester courses) or more during the summer terms.
    • Please note that any part-time courses are not counted towards GPA calculation, although they will be used to meet the pre-requisite and degree requirements.
  • Minimum GPA:
    • Minimum GPA required to apply is 3.6/4.0 for all applicants. However, the average GPA of admitted students for 2023-2024 cycle was 3.95/4.0.
  • Required Course Load:
    • Although there is no strict requirement for course load, U of T’s GPA calculation only includes the courses taken on a full-time basis. As a result, applicants must have taken at least 3 years of full-time undergraduate years to be eligible for GPA calculation, resulting in indirect full-time course load requirement.

    • 1. In what way(s) are you a product of the world around you? How was it, or how will it, impact your journey in medicine?
    • 2. Investor and philanthropist Charlie Munger is known for saying: “We all are learning, modifying, or destroying ideas all the time. Rapid destruction of your ideas when the time is right is one of the most valuable qualities you can acquire. You must force yourself to consider arguments on the other side.” Explore how this may affect a career in medicine.

INTERVIEW

  • U of T has their own interview style, called virtual Modified Personal Interview (vMPI). It is similar to MMI, in that it consists of 4 independent interviewers assessing one applicant. In 2024-2025 cycle, each interview was around 5 minutes long, with 2 minutes to review and prepare your responses. It is typically conducted asynchronously.

    • To be eligible, applicants must self-declare their Indigenous status and submit a proof of Indigenous ancestry. Additionally, applicants must submit a 250-750 words ISAP personal essay to describe your connection to Indigenous community.
  • Military Medical Training Plan (MMTP): MMTP applicants must still meet the same minimum eligibility criteria as the general stream applicants. Applicants must be currently serving as a regular force member of the Canadian Armed Forces.
  • MD/PhD Combined Program
  • Community of Support (CoS) Program: This is a program with an initiative to increase the number of students who are Indigenous, Black, Filipino, Latin American, Economically disadvantaged, Mature-students, or those with a disability.
    • This program provides eligible applicants with one-on-one advising and access to admissions events, provide mentors and support at each stage of application process.

    • MCAT is required for admissions to Queen’s university. The minimum MCAT required is a total score of 500, which 125 in each section. With the new changes to their admissions process of integrating lottery-based selection, MCAT is no longer used competitively but rather as a threshold.

    • CASPer is required for admissions to Queen’s university, and it will be used as a threshold. However, the threshold is set annually and it is not released to the public.

EXTRACURRICULARS

  • All applicants will be asked to fill out Autobiographical Sketch (ABS) on their OMSAS portal. These are classified as: Employment, Volunteer activities, Extracurricular activities, Awards and Accomplishments, Research, and Other. You can enter up to 32 entries on the portal.
    • However, please note that Queen’s university does not consider “other” section or any activities from high school. If the activity started in high school and continued in postsecondary education, only the time starting at postsecondary is reviewed.
  • Amongst these activities, applicants will be prompted to identify the top 3 activities that are believed to be the most important in the Employment, Volunteer Activities and Extracurricular Activities categories.
  • Queen’s university has implemented a new selection system, called “Qualified Applicant Randomization Selection (QARS) process”. This means that a limited number of applicants will be selected for MMI through a “lottery-based” selection, given that the applicants have met the minimum eligibility criteria.
    • Combined MD/PhD and MD/MSc applicants will not be subjected to QARS process.
    • MMTP and ISAP applicants each have their own separate QARS process.

INTERVIEW

  • Queen’s university conducts interview in two different stages, using both the MMI and panel-style interview. QARS-selected candidates will be invited to MMI, and only those selected from MMI will proceed to panel interview.
    • Queen’s MMI is conducted virtually and asynchronously. There is no official source of detailed information around MMI format. However, it is typically thought to have 6 stations, with 2 minutes of preparing, 5 minutes of response, and 2 minutes of follow-up questions.
    • Queen’s panel interview is also conducted virtually, but it involves 2 interviewers (usually a faculty member and a medical student) assessing a candidate synchronously. Panel interview have ranged from 15 minutes to 25 minutes previously and is a more traditional-style interview.

PATHWAYS/SPECIAL STREAMS

  • Indigenous Student Admissions Pathway (ISAP): A minimum of 4 seats are reserved for ISAP applicants. Indigenous applicants do not need CASPer test although it is encouraged if applicants still want to be considered for general stream. Furthermore, there is no minimum MCAT required.
    • To be eligible, applicants must provide a proof of Indigenous ancestry and a verifier who can confirm their connection to Indigenous community. Additionally, Indigenous applicants must also provide a letter to request consideration and expand on their background and motivation.
  • Black Student Admissions Pathway (BSAP): Applicants can self-identify on their application to be considered for this pathway. Black applicants will have priority made to have black faculty/resident/student members participate in their file review and interview process.
    • To be eligible, applicants must submit supplementary personal essay on OMSAS.
  • Military Medical Training Program Pathway (MMTP): MMTP applicants must still meet the same minimum eligibility criteria as the general stream applicants. They must also meet the necessary requirements of the military.
  • Socioeconomic Accountability Admissions Pathway (SAAP): 8% of the MMI seats are reserved for SAAP applicants for applicants from a low socioeconomic status.
    • To be eligible, applicants must apply for the AMFC OMSAS Fee waiver program and indicate your interest to be considered under this stream on OMSAS
    • Applicants must still meet the same minimum eligibility criteria as the general stream applicants. Those who meet the minimum criteria and do not receive an MMI offer will be entered into a second randomized selection process for the 8% MMI seats.
  • Combined Programs (MD/PhD & MD/MSc)
  • Lakeridge Family Medicine Program: This is a family medicine specialized program, and around 20 students get accepted each year. Applicants must indicate their interest to apply under this stream on OMSAS.
    • To be eligible, applicants must also provide their responses a series of short answer questions and 2 additional reference letters in addition to the 3 references requirement. You may use the same references, but there will be a different set of questions in each form.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

  • GPA: University of Ottawa uses 4.0 scale. To convert your grades, use the OMSAS GPA conversion chart here. For detailed how-to for calculating your GPA, please see this post.
    • University of Ottawa calculates cumulative GPA (cGPA) using courses from the 3 most recent full-time years. The full-time years are defined as 5 courses per semester. The cGPA will include all full-time courses taken during the regular fall and winter academic years as well as during spring/summer terms.
    • Any school year with less than 4 courses per term will not be included in the GPA calculation.
  • Minimum GPA:
    • Minimum GPA required to apply is 3.5/4.0 for all applicants. Although there is no official detailed admissions statistics posted by University of Ottawa, it is speculated that the average GPA of accepted students are somewhere around 3.9/4.0. As such, having a high GPA is critical for University of Ottawa.
  • Required Course Load:
    • University of Ottawa requires a minimum of three years full-time studies for applicants to be eligible. Any academic year with 4 courses per term will be recognized as full-time if the missing credits/courses are fulfilled within another academic year (such as in winter) or in spring/summer term.
  • Minimum Credits Required:
    • University of Ottawa requires applicants to have completed at least 3 years of full-time studies (5 courses per term) prior to admission into the program.
  • Pre-requisite Courses:
    • There are several mandatory pre-requisite courses outlined by University of Ottawa. Please see below:
      • 6 units (3 units = 1 semester course) in humanities/social sciences
      • 6 units in Biology
      • 3 units in organic chemistry
      • 3 units in biocheistry
      • 3 units in statistics
    • Applicants must have a laboratory component in two of the science courses or 1 exclusively laboratory course equivalent to 6 units in addition to pre-requisite courses.
    • Pre-requisite courses with a minimum of 3.0/4.0 taken outside of the most recent 3 years will be counted towards fulfilling this requirement. However, they will not count towards the GPA calculation.

RESIDENCE

  • University of Ottawa has a regional preference for applicants from Ottawa and surrounding areas. Approximately 70% of the seas are reserved for regional applicants. To be eligible, applicants must have completed high school in Ottawa or surrounding areas. To see eligible areas, please see below in regional initiative section under the Pathways/Special steams.
    • If applicant did not attend high school in areas stated above but wish to be considered as regional applicant, they must provide a letter explaining their rationale.
  • Please note that there are changes to IP status following the Ontario government’s announcement on legislation changes. This legislation proposes that 95% of the Ontario’s medical school seats be allocated for Ontario residents. However, it is still unclear how this will impact University of Ottawa’s medical school seat allocation.

EXTRACURRICULARS

  • All applicants will be asked to fill out Autobiographical Sketch (ABS) on their OMSAS portal. These are classified as: Employment, Volunteer activities, Extracurricular activities, Awards and Accomplishments, Research, and Other. You can enter up to 32 entries on the portal.
  • Amongst these activities, applicants will be prompted to identify the top 3 activities in each category that best prepared applicants to apply to medicine.

INTERVIEW

  • University of Ottawa conducts traditional panel-style interview for selected candidates. There is no official information on whether the interview is conducted virtually or in-person, but it has been conducted virtually in the recent years. Based on different forums, interview involves three interviewers, who may be a physician, medical student, and a community member. It typically takes anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour.
  • Please note that if you have interviewed 3 times, your application will be rejected. This policy applies to both the general and special stream/pathway applicants.

REFERENCES

  • All applicants are required to submit three referees through OMSAS application portal. In choosing three referees, these are the following recommended criteria:
    • One academic or employment related
    • One non-academic / character referee
    • One referee of your choosing
  • References completing the Confidential Assessment Forms (CAF) will be asked the following questions:

PATHWAYS/SPECIAL STREAMS

  • Black Student Application Program (BSAP): Applicants must still meet the same minimum eligibility criteria as the general stream applicants.
    • To be eligible, applicants must self-identify on OMSAS and provide a 500-words letter of intent to describe why they chose to apply through this program.
  • Canadian Armed Forces: Applicants who are current member of the Canadian Armed Forces may be eligible to apply to this stream. They must still meet the minimum eligibility criteria as the general stream applicants.
    • Applicants must email the Canadian Forces Health Services (CFHS) Attraction Cell to provide notice of intent to apply.
  • Francophone Candidates outside Ontario and Quebec: This pathway is for applicants applying in the French stream. Up to 8 seats are reserved for French-speaking applicants outside of Ontario and Quebec. Applicants must still meet the same minimum eligibility criteria as the general stream applicants.
    • To be eligible, applicants must be a student whose permanent address is not from Ontario or Quebec for more than 5 years. Applicants must also choose French as their language of instruction.
    • Introduction letter to indicate their application to this stream must be emailed to Admissions office in addition to applying through OMSAS.
  • Government of Nunavut: Applicants must still meet the same minimum eligibility criteria as the general stream applicants, except:
    • CASPer is not required and cGPA calculated will be best 3 years of full-time university studies rather than the 3 most recent years.
    • If applicants are Nunavut Inuit students, they must submit:

    • To be eligible, applicants must submit each parental/legal guardian’s notice of assessment issued by the CRA during the time applicants were in Grade 11 and 12. Applicants must also submit the Social Accountability Initiative Form.
    • Applicants must have had a yearly total parental/guardian pre-tax income in Grade 11 and 12 to be less than or equal to $60,000 as per CRA data.
  • Regional Initiative: As mentioned previously, University of Ottawa reserves 70% of the seats for applicants from Ottawa and surrounding areas. Postal code at the time of applicants attending high school will be used to verify.

  • Graduate students: While this is not an official admissions pathway, graduate students may be eligible for the addition of 0.2 to their GPA. There is no separate pool for graduate students and the grades from their 4-year bachelor’s degree will be used to calculate the GPA.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

  • GPA: McMaster university uses 4.0 scale. To convert your GPA, use the OMSAS GPA conversion table here. For detailed how-to for calculating your GPA, please see this post.
    • McMaster university uses cumulative GPA (cGPA) in their assessment.
    • All undergraduate grades including supplementary, spring, summer, part-time and distance education courses will be used to calculate the overall GPA.
  • Minimum GPA:
    • Minimum GPA required to apply is 3.0/4.0 for all applicants. However, the mean GPA for admitted students for 2023-2024 cycle was 3.92/4.0.
  • Required Course Load:
    • There is no required course load for applicants to have taken to be eligible.
  • Minimum Credits Required:
    • McMaster university requires a minimum of 3 years of undergraduate degree to be completed by May of the year of entry.
  • Pre-requisite Courses:
    • There are no mandatory pre-requisite courses to apply to McMaster University.

ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENTS

  • MCAT:
    • MCAT is required for admissions to McMaster university. However, McMaster only considers CARS score as part of their assessment. While the minimum CARS score required is 123, it is used competitively and the mean CARS score of admitted students in 2023-2024 cycle was 129.
  • CASPer
    • CASPer is also required for application, and is used competitively for McMaster.

RESIDENCE

  • McMaster university gives preference for Ontario residents, where 90% of the seats are allocated for IP applicants and 10% allocated for OOP applicants.
  • Please note that there may be changes to IP status following the Ontario government’s announcement on legislation changes. This legislation proposes that 95% of the Ontario’s medical school seats be allocated for Ontario residents. However, it is still unclear how this will impact McMaster’s medical school seat allocation.

  • Ontario’s IP criteria that comes into effect starting this cycle is as follows:
    • Applicant or their spouse has, at any time after their 14th birthday, resided in Ontario for at least 12 consecutive months and has either:
      • received an Ontario Secondary School Diploma; or
      • not resided in another province or territory for 12 or more consecutive months since completing the most recent 12 month residency period in Ontario
    • To determine that the applicant or spouse has met the criteria, the full-time studies at a post-secondary institution will not be included unless:
      • Applicant or spouse was in a full-time, in-person degree in Ontario; and
      • The program attended is one that is ordinarily completed in four or more academic years

EXTRACURRICULARS

  • McMaster uses the following selection formula:
    • For Interview Invites: 32% GPA + 32% CARS + 32% CASPer + Up to 4% Graduate degree bonus
    • For Final Admissions: 70% MMI Score + 15% GPA + 15% CARS
  • McMaster does not directly consider extracurricular activities outlined in the autobiographic sketch (ABS) as part of their assessment.

INTERVIEW

  • McMaster university conducts virtual MMI style interview for selected applicants. There is no official information regarding the details of how MMI is conducted. However, McMaster generally has 10 stations with 2 minutes of reading and prepping time and 8 minutes of response time.

REFERENCES

  • All applicants are required to submit three referees through OMSAS application portal. In choosing three referees, these are the following recommended criteria:
    • One academic or employment related
    • One non-academic / character referee
    • One referee of your choosing
  • References completing the Confidential Assessment Forms (CAF) will be asked the following questions:
    • 1. Would this applicant make a good physician?
    • 2. Rate the applicant on each of the following attributes: Communication skills, Problem-solving skills, Professionalism, Empathy
    • 3. Identify and comment on 1 area of improvement for the applicant
    • 4. Share any other information you feel may be relevant to a medical school’s admission committee

PATHWAYS/SPECIAL STREAMS

  • Facilitated Indigenous Admissions Program (FIAP): Indigenous applicants must meet the same minimum eligibility criteria as the general stream applicants.
    • Applicants applying through this stream will be asked to complete the FIAP self-identification application.
    • Qualified Indigenous applicants will be given a choice to defer providing their MCAT score until after interview decisions have been released.
  • Black Applicants: Black Equity Stream (BESt): Black applicants must meet the same minimum eligibility criteria as the general stream applicants.
    • Applicants applying through this stream will be asked to write a personal essay. This essay will help determine applicant’s suitability to this stream, and is not scored.
  • Military Medical Training Program (MMTP): MMTP applicants must meet the same minimum eligibility criteria as the general stream applicants.
    • To be eligible, applicant must be an active member of the Canadian Armed Forces and send an introduction letter to the MD Program Admissions Office to indicate that they have applied through the MMTP.
    • Maximum of 3 seats are allocated for MMTP applicants per year.
  • MD/PhD Combined Program: Applicants must submit their application through both the OMSAS and McMaster University School of Graduate Studies portal. Applicants must be accepted to both programs to be eligible.
    • Maximum of 3 seats are allocated for MD/PhD applicants per year.
  • Graduate Applicants: While this is not an official admissions pathway, graduate students will be eligible for up to 4% bonus to the pre-interview selection formula.
    • Graduate students must provide a letter indicating that their supervisors are aware of applicants’ intention to apply to McMaster university’s medical school. This requirement is not needed if their supervisor is one of three referees.
