ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
- GPA: Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) uses 4.0 scale. To convert your GPA, use this chart. For detailed how-to for calculating your GPA, please see this post.
- All grades including supplementary, spring, summer, part-time and distance education courses will be used to calculate the overall GPA.
- Minimum GPA:
- There is no minimum GPA required to apply to MUN. However, MUN states that 3.6 is a general trend for competitiveness. The mean GPA of accepted applicants in 2023-2024 cycle was 85.03% (~3.8 GPA).
- Required Course Load:
- Although there is no explicit mention of required course load, MUN strongly encourages students to have a full course load in each year of study. However, it is not a mandatory requirement. Applicants with less than a full course load each semester can elaborate with details on their application if needed.
- Minimum Credits Required:
- MUN requires applicants to have obtained a Bachelor’s degree before admission.

ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENTS
- MCAT
- MCAT is required for admissions to MUN. There is no minimum MCAT score required to apply. MUN states that the general trend for competitiveness is minimum MCAT score of 500.
- CASPer
- CASPer is also required for application. MUN states that the general trend for competitiveness for CASPer is second quartile (2Q) or higher.
RESIDENCE
- MUN gives preference for the residents of Newfoundland and Labrador (NL), where up to 84 seats are allocated to IP applicants each year. Additionally, MUN has allocated seating for PEI residents, where up to 20 seats are given to PEI residents who will be studying at University of PEI site. Furthermore, 3 seats are reserved for Indigenous applicants and the remaining 6 seats are given to OOP applicants.
- To be considered a NL resident, you must have:
- completed 4 years of junior high/high school between grade 7 and Level III in NL within the 12 years of the application date
- your permanent address located in NL for at least the immediate three prior years at the time of application while not attending a post-secondary institution
- To be considered a PEI resident, you must meet at least one of the following categories:
- If you are a dependent student: Applicant and parents/guardian must have resided in PEI for one period of 24 consecutive months immediately prior to the application
- If you are an independent student: Applicant must have resided continuously in PEI for one period of 24 consecutive months immediately prior to the application, excluding the time spent in post-secondary institutions
- Applicant must have completed 4 years of junior high/high school between grade 7 and 12 in PEI within the 12 years of the date of application
EXTRACURRICULARS
- All applicants will be asked to fill out an autobiographical sketch, which will describe applicants’ work experience and extracurricular activities. MUN encourages applicants to only enter the activities that applicants are consistently participating in.
- For employment, applicants will be asked enter work experience obtained starting at the post-secondary level, unless it is continued throughout the post-secondary education.
- For extracurricular activities, enter the activities that you take part in or perform regularly and have a history of doing for a notable period over the past 5-7 years. MUN discourages one-off events or daily living tasks being listed. Select the activities that demonstrates your long term commitment and/or involvement.
- MUN aims to select candidates who demonstrates altruism in their entries, and seeks for: Integrity, Respect for others, Compassion, Empathy, Personal insight, Communication skills, Interpersonal skills, Maturity and Motivation.
INTERVIEW
- MUN conducts MMI style interview along with 30 minutes of competencies assessment for selected applicants virtually.
- MUN’s MMI will consist of 8 stations. There is no detail of the MMI mentioned on the official website. Typically, there will be 2-3 minutes of reading and prepping and 5-6 minutes of response time.
- Competencies assessment will be scored by three assessors. This component will be centered around the CanMEDS roles and personal questions to get to know the applicants and their experiences better.
REFERENCES
- Each applicant must submit two references on their application. Of the two referees, at least one reference must be academic-related. To see if your reference qualifies their requirement, check these criteria.
- For mature students, you may request an exemption for academic reference if both of the following criteria are met:
- You must have graduated from an accredited university for 5+ years and have not taken any courses since graduation
- You must be a working professional for at least two years in a field directly related to your post-secondary education
PATHWAYS/SPECIAL STREAMS
- Indigenous Application Program: As an Indigenous applicant, you must provide a proof of Indigenous ancestry. In addition, you will be asked to submit a recent (within 12 months) letter of support submitted by a leader or Elder of your Indigenous community.
- As part of the application process, you will also be asked to write a short essay about your experience as an Indigenous person that discusses what your Indigenous identity means to you and how it will influence you in your program of study.
- Indigenous seats are prioritized for NL residents, but MUN encourages Indigenous Canadians from across Canada to apply
